About Marcelino

Marcelino Freitas was born on the 20th of April 1982 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began his training in jiu-jitsu in April of 1994 at age of 12, under Master Andre Pederneiras (leader and founder of Team Nova Uniao). In June 2002 Andre Pederneiras promoted Marcelino to Black Belt on the podium when he won the World Cup at brown belt level.

Marcelino is a fifth degree Black Belt with more than 28 years of experience competing and training at the highest level. He is an accomplished grappler with several important title wins including, Three times World Champion, Seven times Brazilian National, Two times Pan Pacific and has multiple IBJJF titles. In his time at Nova Uniao headquarters, Marcelino was part of one of the best lightweight Jiu Jitsu teams the World has seen, training daily with some of the best grapplers of all time like Robson Moura, Vitor Shaolin, José Aldo and Leonardo Santos.

In 2009 Marcelino took an opportunity for six months to teach at Vitor Ribeiro’s Academy in New York where he also competed in the prestigious New York Open winning the featherweight division.

Marcelino moved to Australia in 2010 where he has been successfully teaching, competing and sharing his passion for the gentle art of Jiu-Jitsu ever since. His approach to teaching is very professional, helping his students to succeed both on and off the mat. The standard he has set is second to none.
